Located 2,430 meters high in a place of great beauty, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, the Machu Picchu sanctuary was probably the most amazing architectural realization of the Inca Empire in its heyday. Its walls, terraces and gigantic ramps give the impression of having been sculpted in the escarpments of the rock, as if they were part of it. The natural frame, located on the eastern slope of the Andes, is part of the upper Amazon basin, which has a very varied flora and fauna. Machu Picchu Information:

Machu Picchu, Quechua term meaning Old Mountain. Today it is universally known, both for its imposing archaeological remains, as for its incomparable location, on the edge of an abyss in whose bottom run the mighty waters of the Urubamba River.

Machu Picchu, more than a citadel, is an architectural complex that only lacks the roofs. This complex is called a city, due to the large number of houses that currently number more than 200, and at its peak they must have been more. In addition, its design includes plazas, temples, roads, stairways, terraces, aqueducts, etc.

 

Area

With an area of 32,592 hectares, it is considered one of the wonders of the world and was declared a Cultural and Natural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1983.

Weather

Because it is in a subtropical zone it has a temperature that oscillates between 8º to 22º C. The rainiest months go from December to April.

Rainy during all the summer months (from December to March), this is the best season for climbing Machu Picchu. Sunny between May and September, although even then squalls are not uncommon. The maximum temperatures reach 27 ° C.

 

Location

The archaeological zone is located on the left bank of the Vilcanota river, in the Kusi Chaka creek, until the mouth of the Aobamba river. In the district of Machu Picchu, province of Urubamba, department of Cusco at 112.5 km. northeast of the city of Cusco in Peru. To get to the Inca city of Machu Picchu, you can choose two routes:

  • Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
  • Rail to Aguas Calientes and from there by car or walking until you reach the mountain where the citadel is located.

Best time to visit Machu Picchu

The best season is during the dry season, which covers the months April to the end of September. In October the rains begin and you can find Machu Picchu covered by clouds. Machu Picchu Entrance Tickets

Entrance tickets for any of the routes are not sold at the access control. In the case of Huayna Picchu, you will not be able to enter this area without the corresponding ticket. The maximum capacity of entrance is of 400 visitors per day, divided in two groups of 200 people according to the indicated schedule. For the case of the mountain Machupicchu 800 visitors in two schedules of 400 people. To buy the electronic ticket to Machupicchu follow the following steps:

  • Make the reservation through the web page: www.machupicchu.gob.pe, consigning the date of visit, personal data and the route to visit. (Remember that this reservation is valid for 3 hours).
  • Once the reservation is made you can pay the amount online using a VISA credit card that has the Verifed by Visa security system or cancel the amount in one of the authorized offices.
  • Once the payment has been made, you must go back to the website www.machupicchu.gob.pe and enter the Check In tab where you must enter the reservation code number in order to print the entrance ticket to Machupicchu according to the selected modality.

Schedule:

The entrance time to the citadel of Machu Picchu is from 06:00 to 16:00 hours, the departure time is until 5:00 pm with a capacity of 2500 visitors per day.

 

What bring to Machu Picchu

  • Your passport! You will not be able to enter without it!
  • Your entrance to Machu Picchu and the additional ones (if you bought it).
  • Money for the stamp in the passport, hygienic services and if you want to buy souvenirs or have lunch / dinner in the restaurant (expensive).
  • A camera (and perhaps a selfiestick).
  • Good shoes to walk.
  • Water.
  • A lunch box and some snacks.
  • Sunblock and / or umbrella depending on the weather.

What not to bring to Machu Picchu

  • Tripods are not allowed in the citadel. You can leave it in one of the lockers outside.
  • Professional cameras are not allowed. Permissions for professional cameras are worth more than $ 300 so it's best not to bring a camera that looks professional.
  • You will not be able to enter Machu Picchu with your big backpack. Only small models are allowed so leave the backpack in Aguas Calientes if you are with her. You can pay a small amount for the hotel / hostel to take care of it.
  • Walking sticks can not enter unless the person needs it.
  • Only small umbrellas can enter so do not bring a big one.
