The historic center of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for its numerous architectural monuments from the colonial era and the beginning of the Republic. The most visited places are the Plaza de Armas, Plaza San Martín, the San Francisco Convent, among others. However, one of the treasures of colonial architecture goes unnoticed by most: Casa Aliaga, located next to the Government Palace. It is the longest-lived colonial residence in Lima, dating from the first half of the 16th century. After the founding of Lima, in 1935, the conquistador Pizarro handed over that site to Captain Jerónimo de Aliaga y Ramírez, and from that date to the present day seventeen generations of the same family have lived. Entering La Casa de Aliaga is transporting yourself to the colonial and republican past and getting away from the hustle and bustle of downtown Lima. Its elegant halls, adorned with paintings from Cusco and Lima, as well as French Louis XVI style furniture, show a harmonious mix of architecture from the 16th to the 14th centuries. Address: Jirón de la Unión 224. Reservations: casadealiaga.com
History
After the founding of Lima, on January 18, 1535, Captain Jerónimo de Aliaga y Ramírez received a plot of land next to the house of the conquistador Francisco Pizarro (now the Government Palace). From then until today, the descendants of Captain Aliaga have continued to inhabit the house, thus becoming the oldest house in the Americas, which has been the home of the same family for 17 generations. Rebuilt and remodeled after earthquakes and changes in architectural fashion, the mansion has served almost 5 centuries along with the history of the city of Lima. Its artistic value comes from the beauty of its interior space, from the poetic and evocative of its environments and from the original distribution of these. Touring the beautiful halls of this manor house one can perceive the history of Viceroyalty and Republican Lima.
Urban Attraction
Casa Aliaga, also known as Casa Solariega Aliaga, is one of the oldest residences in the city of Lima. It is known that the site was ceded to Jerónimo de Aliaga Ramírez by Francisco Pizarro himself in 1535, the year the City was founded, and that it was that same year that the construction of this building began, which has as a peculiarity, continuing to be inhabited, after centuries, by the descendants of the initial Aliaga. It is known that the house succumbed to an earthquake unleashed in the eighteenth century, however it was rebuilt shortly after. Nowadays, due to its antiquity, historical value and for being the oldest house that is still inhabited by the initial family, it is part of the Cultural Heritage of the Nation. Currently the spaces of Casa Aliaga are partially open to the public, either for guided tours that allow you to discover the 18 rooms it has, or for holding corporate events, dinners and lunches, among others.
