The Paseo Cívico de Tacna is the main public space in the city of Tacna, Peru. Around it rise soberly the Cathedral of Tacna, the Monument to the Heroes and the Ornamental Pool of Tacna, delimited by Avenida San Martín street.
Important civic events in the city are carried out in this place. Like every Sunday of the civic calendar in the midst of civic ceremonies, the national flag is raised and the oath of Francisco Bolognesi is renewed, culminating with a civic-military parade of the different educational, public and private entities.
August 28 is the end point of the Flag Procession, where it culminates with the raising of the flag after walking through the streets of the city, celebrating the Reincorporation of Tacna to Peru after almost 50 years of Chilean occupation. .
History
It was called Plazuela de la Matriz during the colony and it acquired prominence with the installation of the iron basin built in the Simpson workshops, in Liverpool (England), based on a design by the Frenchman Olgenhard and installed by Matias Richet. And then it expanded its radius with the construction of the new temple. In 1869 the Ornamental Pool of Tacna was gifted and installed on said promenade during the government of José Balta.
In 1892, during the Chilean occupation, on the occasion of the IV centenary of the discovery of America, the Italian colony residing in Tacna together with the Chilean delegations placed the monument to Christopher Columbus there, it was there where the Deed of Naming Plaza Colón was recorded.
In 1957, due to construction for the inauguration of the Parabolic Arch, it was expanded conically upwards, in what is called Paseo Cívico.
Description
This space is located in an urban complex, in the center of the City of Tacna, therefore within said Paseo, you can see different gazebos (Spaces fenced on the roof by bougainvillea intertwined with climbing plants), as well as rose bushes, a fountain of water and a gallery that exhibits paintings and crafts from the city; below the Ornamental Pool.

Monument to the Tacneña Woman
The Monument to the Tacneña Woman occupies a small space in the first blocks of the Paseo Civico, in homage to bravery and for being a symbol of courage, love and patriotism without limits. The monument is made entirely of bronze, it represents the haughty figure of a Tacneña Woman, carrying in her right hand, very high, the national flag, as an expression of love for the Homeland. Characteristic feeling of the Tacneña Woman, kept alive from childhood and knowing how to instill in her children, just as her ancestors did, during the Chilean occupation, where the Tacneña Woman proudly defended the arrogance of the Homeland and the flag national.
The statue measures 1.70 meters high and was molded in the Workshops of the Army War Material Maestranza Company, which welcomed the initiative and desire of the President of the Tacna Club, Ambassador Hugo de Zela Hurtado, in 1994.
Parabolic Arch
The Monument to the Heroes, popularly known as the "Parabolic Arch", is a monument located on the Paseo Cívico in the city of Tacna, built in honor of the heroes of the Pacific War, Admiral Miguel Grau and Colonel Francisco Bolognesi. He is one of the most iconic figures of this public space. It was inaugurated on August 28, 1957 during the government of Manuel Prado Ugarteche with the name of Monument to the heroes Almirante Miguel Grau Seminario and Colonel Francisco Bolognesi.
Votive Lamp
The Votive Lamp is located approximately 4 meters from the Parabolic Arch. It is a bronze plate, decorated with swords and anchors interdistributed and in number of eight each, representing the action of Francisco Bolognesi on land and Miguel Grau at sea. It is lit on occasions of patriotic commemoration.
Tacna Ornamental Pool
It is a pool that adorns the center of the Civic Walk, it is 6 meters high and is on a granite base, it symbolizes Greek mythology. It was designed by the sculptor O' Lenhard and brought from the city of Brussels, by the famous construction company Eiffel. In the Plaza Palermo in the city of Buenos Aires, the only Twin Stack stands, as there is no other in America.
Tacna Cathedral
The Cathedral of Tacna or Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary is the main temple of the city of Tacna; Construction began in 1875, in the same place occupied by the old and first temple of the place. For various reasons; one of them the War of the Pacific, the work culminated in 1954, during the government of Manuel A. Odría. This construction was started by the firm Petot y Compañía, a subsidiary of Messrs. Eiffel in Paris, and completed by the firm “Garibaldi Hermanos S.A.” inaugurated on August 28, 1954. The material used consisted of quarry stone, extracted from the Arunta and Intiorko hills of the city.
Present
In this public space, military-civic protocol activities and ceremonies are held every Sunday and on distinguished dates, as well as various events for carrying out protocol activities of the Municipality as well as various sociocultural activities and festivals at the service of the population.
In August 2018, a project was announced that would carry out the pedestrianization of the Paseo Cívico by 2020. During the beginning of the month of December, the largest Christmas tree in Peru was installed on the Paseo Cívico (Behind the Parabolic Arch), with 30 meters high, in the middle of several concerts and Christmas shows for the local population and tourists.
Flag Procession
It is a civic-military ceremony that takes place in the city of Tacna, August 28 of each year, with the purpose of commemorating the date on which the Province of Tacna rejoined Peru after the period of Chilean occupation under which it was for forty and five years (1884-1929) as a consequence of the Pacific War.
The final point of the tour is on the Paseo Cívico with the raising of the national flag. On August 26, 2009, the National Institute of Culture issues National Directorial Resolution 1191/INC where the Flag Procession is declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation. held in the city of Tacna. for its historical content and cultural expression that affirms Peruvian nationality. This ceremony has been incorporated into most Peruvian patriotic celebrations under the name "Paseo de la Bandera".
