Located in the province of Ferreñafe, it houses 356 pieces and has the Gold Room as its main attraction.
Converted into one of the main cultural venues and tourist attractions on the northern Peruvian coast, the Sicán National Museum celebrates 21 years by hosting one of the largest collections of archaeological pieces that reveal the majesty of the Lambayeque or Sicán civilization, which highlights its extraordinary mastery of goldsmithing, mainly gold and precious stones, as well as ceramics.
Located in the province of Ferreñafe, the Sicán National Museum was inaugurated on March 20, 2001. For its construction and implementation, there was a significant financial and scientific contribution from the government of Japan.
This cultural venue exhibits 356 pieces made by the Sicán or Lambayeque culture, which developed on the north coast between 900 and 1,100 AD. C., and its main attraction is the Gold Room, which exhibits at least 200 pieces made with this precious metal that are part of the funerary trousseau of an elite tomb, which is the richest mausoleum scientifically excavated in the new world.
The tomb was excavated in the Huaca Loro mausoleum temple of the Bosque de Pómac Historical Sanctuary, which features a magnificent gold mask painted red and emerald eyes, discovered in 1991 by researchers Izumi Shimada and Carlos Elera, under the co-direction of the Sicán Archaeological Project.
The museum script allows visitors to learn about the social, cultural and religious process of the Sicán or Lambayeque culture, through a circuit that takes us back to the past.
The museum allows you to have a general view of what was the capital of the Sicán culture in the Batán Grande area. A scale model of the Huaca Loro is exhibited as well as ceramics found at the archaeological site. Replicas have been made of the burial patterns of the two tombs found at Huaca Loro. This allows us to have a clearer idea about the concept of death for the Sicans.
Other rooms offer us dioramas with the description of the techniques used to make ceramics, as well as recreations of the metal working process, from its extraction to the final finish with the use of techniques such as hammering, troweling, casting, openwork, etc. .
The final part of the museum is the most important as the objects found at the archaeological site of Huaca Loro are exhibited here. The crown of the lord of the main tomb is majestic, the representation of the bat with its mouth open amazes with its realism. The earmuffs, calves and other gold ornaments are masterpieces that resisted time and the humidity of the terrain, since the tombs were located an average of 12 meters underground.
