Machu Picchu and Mountains Itinerary

The mountains of Machu Picchu are among the main attractions in the Inca sanctuary. Both Waynapicchu and Machu Picchu Mountain offer unique experiences, the walk through one of these mountains will take you on incredible trails from where you can admire all the scenic beauty of Machu Picchu. But to be able to enjoy the climb to these mountains and the tour of the Inca city you should organize your Machu Picchu itinerary in an appropriate way, so that you can do it without haste or setbacks.

The mountains of Machu Picchu

To be able to enter any of the Machu Picchu mountains, you must purchase one of the combined tickets that include the Machu Picchu mountains.

  • Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu - Group 1 (7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.).
  • Machu Picchu + Huayna Picchu - Group 2 (9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.).
  • Machu Picchu + Mountain - Group 1 (7:00 a.m. - 8:00 a.m.).
  • Machu Picchu + Mountain - Group 2 (10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.).

As you can see the hours of entry to the mountains are made at specific times and in the morning. You must also take into account that you can enter Machu Picchu from six in the morning, it is advisable to enter as early as possible to the Inca city.

If you chose the first time of any of the mountains you can visit the city of Machu Picchu after completing the climb to the mountain you chose; You can stay inside Machu Picchu until 1pm if you chose Waynapicchu and until 2pm if you chose Machu Picchu Mountain.

If you chose the second time of any of the mountains you must visit the Inca city of Machu Picchu before climbing the mountain of your choice. You can stay inside Machu Picchu until 2pm if you chose Waynapicchu and until 3pm if you chose Machu Picchu Mountain.

How should I organize my Machu Picchu Itinerary?

If you want to make a quiet and trouble-free trip, is best staying overnight at machu picchu. Especially if you decide to get through the Inca Trail hike, one of the most amazing hiking trails on the planet, because you will need a lot of energy to climb the mountains. That is why it is important to rest well the night before your visit to Machu Picchu, also if you decide to arrive by the 2 day Inca Trail or the 3 day machu picchu trek.

Usually the Sacred Valley tour will take you to the town of Ollantaytambo and from there you can take the train that will take you to Aguas Calientes. It is also possible that mobility takes you directly from Cusco to the train station in Ollantaytambo.

Being a day before in Machu Picchu town (Aguas Calientes) you will be able to sleep and be rested for the climbing and excursion that you will have to do the next day. This will also allow you to taste the flavor of Peruvian food in many of the restaurants that are in the small town of Machu Picchu and know its surroundings.

On the long awaited day it is recommended that you get up very early to take the transport that will take you to the entrance to Machu Picchu. The buses leave for the Inca city of Machu Picchu starting at 5 in the morning, but you should take into account that the trip lasts between 25 and 30 minutes approximately, in addition to the queues that usually take place at the bus station. The entrance doors to the Inca city open from 6 in the morning.

Incredible landscape of the top of the Machu Picchu mountain It is for this reason that it is totally counterproductive to want to visit Machu Picchu in a single day if you have any of the tickets combined with entry into the mountains, and even if you have your ticket with the second entry to any of the mountains, you would arrive with just the right time, and there would be no time left to travel through the Inca city, in addition to the fatigue and stress that would cause you to make such a hurried trip.

Already completing the entire itinerary to visit Machu Picchu, at sunset you will be back to the town of Aguas Calientes, there you can take and eat something to recharge after knowing the Inca wonder. If you have scheduled it, you can take the return train to Ollantaytambo on any of the trains departing from 4 in the afternoon. Already in Ollantaytambo you can spend the night there or return directly to Cusco.
