Starting in 1900, Ancón began to be recognized as a spa, which together with its mansions and beaches, has become one of the main places visited for rest and recreation by thousands of people. The current Ferreyros boardwalk dates back to 1954, created in 1875, its name commemorating the patriot "Manuel Bartolomé Ferreyros."
The Ancón spa has been remodeled and a walk becomes an unforgettable experience where visitors have the opportunity to see the artisanal port, the beaches with their docks, this being the main reason why it is so preferred. The fact of being able to see the sea, relax, spend a pleasant moment with the family, makes the walk through the spa an opportunity to breathe fresh air.
The beaches that are part of the resort are very quiet, these beaches are cut by piers that generate natural separations between one beach and another. The spa has an extension of 2 kilometers and you can see various buildings that are part of this modern spa.
Ancón, the most beautiful resort in North Lima
Today I tell you that the heat wave has reached the place where I am writing these lines, and with it have also come memories of my childhood and one of the places where I went at least once a year with my family, now be it my uncles, my cousins, my sister or all of them together.
Ancon?
To start telling about this Lima resort, I want to share that I am from Northern Lima and therefore one almost always goes during the summer, which is from December to March, to a Lima beach in the south or north. Although it is true today the most popular are in the south of Lima, we cannot take away the historical value and tourist potential that the Ancón spa has, a spa north of Lima full of a lot of history, full of a beauty that in At its time it competed neck and neck with the most exclusive resorts in South America. Today in Ancón all people succumb in their way of enjoying the Lima summer, it is also not only a place where beach tourism was forged but also a place with a lot of history for my beloved Peruvian nation such as the famous treaty of Ancón, which put an end to the bloody 19th century war between Chile, Peru and Bolivia.
Location of Ancon
Ancón is located about 40 kilometers away from the center of Lima, it is without a doubt a beautiful and unique place. This place is today part of one of the districts of Lima and it is a place that has also marked me. Additionally, I tell you that Ancón is not only a beautiful place but it is also a place where since pre-Hispanic or rather pre-Columbian times different cultures have been converging, such as the Chancay cultures. On the other hand, in times of the colonial period it was a simple fishing cove and to give you more details I tell you that at the time of emancipation it was one of the ports where the liberating squad landed in search of the long-awaited independence of Peru. It was carried out in the year 1821 (I take this opportunity to tell you that, as you are realizing, there are less than five years left until the celebration of the bicentennial of Peru's independence).
And last but not least, it is precisely in this resort where the talks were held to end the Pacific War (the one I mentioned between Peru, Chile and Bolivia). At the beginning of the 20th century, Ancón became one of the fashionable spas for Lima residents and visitors. I am going to tell you about all this and much more throughout this simple but interesting tribute to Ancón.
The transportation point to get to Ancón
First, I want to tell you that my city is growing in an exorbitant way and today Ancón is part of it and that is why public transportation in Lima today already connects the center of Lima, for example, with the beach area of Ancón. There, for example, you will find the famous white Anconeros buses with a blue stripe in the shape of waves and another yellow line, which was the one I used to go to Ancón on any weekend, passing through the busy North Pan-American Highway.
Ancón has a lot to tell, especially about all the marine wealth that it contains for each of us, as many already know, the Peruvian sea is one of the richest in the world and this small piece of Peru is perfect to become a presentation window of the rich value of the sea that my beautiful Peru tells.
Melting pot of cultures in Ancón
There is something that I have been able to experience and that is that although Ancón has been changing throughout its history, there is something that has given a special seal to this spa and that is that it has been able to give it a great benefit in becoming or always remaining as a spa for pedestrians instead of giving space to cars. When I think about this, for example, all the changes that the very busy Costa Verde of the districts of Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro, Magdalena and San Miguel have had to go through, can you imagine what that area would look like if there were suffered the same fate as Ancón? I know that I am a dreamer and dreaming costs nothing, but just thinking about each of those stages that we can win for the benefit of the people of Lima undoubtedly brings a big smile to my face.
Ancón is a spa with spaces so that its neighbors and visitors can go for a walk through its spa that today has a tile with black and white colors, a space divided with its houses and buildings that gives it that unique touch that tells us that a great past was around these parts.
As I was already telling you, Ancón is one of the resorts in Lima that has an infinite amount of history and those stories go back to ancient stages under the backdrop of a beautiful landscape that has been transformed over time and its enviable Marine ecosystem.
During the 20th century, the Ancón resort managed to become one of the most important resorts for Lima residents to spend the summer and relax.
Perhaps many of you will be wondering where the word Ancón comes from, well let's start by clarifying that doubt, Ancón according to historians means "cove" this means a quiet place where one can rest such as a bay, which in The case of Ancón is a closed bay.
Origin of the word Ancón
There are also other theories of the origin of the word Ancón, one of them is for example that Ancón means "hidden corner" as you can see we can tell many stories and even telling them with legends since Ancón is located between the sea and the desert .
Its waters are calm and it is thanks to this that different populations were able to settle to be able to take advantage of all the marine wealth that this magical place has. Despite being located between the coasts of the Peruvian sea, Ancón has the advantage of having its waters. quiet and relaxing thanks to the conformation of its mountains that are like a kind of pillars that protect the area from its big waves, this is one of the things that I remember most about Ancón and that is why when I was a child I went here many times with my family, as well as another spa called “La Punta” but I will tell you about this other place another time.
Ancón is also located in front of the hills, one of them is, for example, Pasamayo, which resembles the desert. Anyone would say that there is no biodiversity here, but once you enter the sea and can see everything that the fishermen catch with their nets, you will be amazed. You will be left with your mouth open.
Its museum and its history
In Ancón there is also a museum where you can appreciate and understand the entire history of the ancient Peruvians who decided to settle in these parts because of the tranquility of its waters and the marine wealth that they could find there, it has even been possible to find other cultures. such as Chavin, and others like Chancay and even the Inca culture.
The Ancón Museum was inaugurated approximately in 1993 thanks to an agreement that was made between the prestigious Museum of Art of Lima and the Board of Trustees of Ancón, thanks to these efforts you can find recreations of pre-Columbian burial, textiles and ceramics from each of the cultures that I have mentioned previously.
In Ancón the first archeological works refer to a cemetery that could be found there and not only that but also to different hunters and gatherers who lived here.
