The Willkawain Archaeological Monument is located 7 km northeast of the city of the Independencia District, in the Populated Center of Paria, at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level. Willkawain comes from two Quechua words: Willca (Huilca): Sacred and Huain: House; Sacred House or Temple. It was one of the administrative centers of the Wari Culture (700 to 1,100 AD), of the Middle Horizon period, although it seems that its origin is older, as one of the centers of the Recuay Culture, of the Early Intermediate.
Previously, in the Recuay Culture they used tombs in underground galleries that were replaced by imposing mausoleums or chullpas, superimposed platforms containing several chambers or mortuary rooms inside, where members of the elite would be buried. The masonry of its walls is made of stone carved with stone pachillas joined with clay mortar; The main chullpa or main mausoleum has three floors or platforms linked by interior stairs and ramps; Each floor has independent access, the entrance to the first level is on the west side, the second on the south and the third level on the east side. In total it has 19 interior rooms: 5 on the first floor, 7 on the second and 7 on the third floor. It also has a ventilation system for galleries and wells. The roof has a cover and was filled with firm earth and small stones, presenting a curved fall to the sides to provide it with impermeability.
The archaeological site presents a site museum, where you can see the different cultural materials found in the area. Due to its location, the place is ideal for short visits from the city of Huaraz with family and friends, where you will find important vestiges of our past, a clear example of pre-Hispanic architecture and engineering, finding chullpas that were used to deposit offerings and mummies to which were worshiped, this enclosure was built during the presence of the Huari culture, an Andean civilization that flourished in the Andes of Peru. And in the month of May of each year, you can participate in the scheduled event called Festiwaraq, which consists of the recreation of the ritual of Waraq Inti (dawn sun) which is the representation of the worship of the Sun God and in which worship is performed. to the ancestors.
