The museum, inaugurated on November 11, 1923, exhibits works of Italian art from the early 20th century. The initial collection was selected by the art critic Mario Vannini Parenti, who between 1921 and 1922 traveled to Italy, where he acquired almost 200 works of art - including sculptures, paintings, engravings, watercolors, drawings and ceramics - by more than 120 contemporary artists. from all regions of the country, among which stand out: Giorgio Belloni, Italico Brass, Oscar Ghiglia, Gian Emilio Malerba, among others. For this reason, the collection of the Museum of Italian Art is a unique sample of art from the turn of the century in Italy, even though the avant-garde is not present.
The Museum of Italian Art is the only European art museum in Lima that has exhibited, since 1923, paintings, sculptures, drawings, engravings and ceramics by Italian artists from the early 20th century.
Where is the Museum of Italian Art located?
The Museum of Italian Art of Lima is located in the historic center of the city, one of the museums in Lima, particularly because it is the only one of European art in Peru where works from the beginning of the 20th century can be seen. In fact it is the only Italian art museum in the world outside of Italy.
History
In 1921, when the centenary of National Independence was commemorated, the Italian colony, encouraged by Don Gino Salocchi, decided to donate the Museum of Italian Art to Peru. The building project was entrusted to the Milanese architect Gaetano Moretti, and the selection of the works to the critic Mario Vannini Parenti, who was concerned that contemporary artists from all Italian regions were represented. Advised by Ugo Ojetti, he acquired almost 200 works for the museum from more than 100 artists.
The Museum of Italian Art thus becomes a unique sample of art from the beginning of the century in Italy, even though the avant-garde is not present.
What to see at the Museum of Italian Art?
On its façade there are 2 large mosaics showing important figures such as Christopher Columbus, Dante Alighieri, Saint Francis of Assisi, Leonardo Da Vinci and Marco Polo.
Its collection has been created over time thanks to donations of pieces from the Italian colony and the support of the Italian embassy in Peru.
This collection is made up mainly of paintings, ceramic pieces and sculptures that have been acquired directly from art galleries in different regions of Italy.
The 6 large rooms can be explored freely without guides and in them we will find works such as a stained glass window of La Primavera by Sandro Boticcelli or a painting that portrays Dante Alighieri's Encounter with his love Beatriz. There are in total more than 200 artistic pieces by at least 100 contemporary Italian artists that make up the museum's collection.
