The Arin Waterfalls, also known as the Mermaid Waterfalls, are one of the most charming natural attractions in the Peruvian Sacred Valley and, as already mentioned, they are located in the province of Calca, Cusco region. Access is easy, since they can even be seen from the main road; so, to get there, it is necessary to make a climb of about 30 minutes, a short journey but full of Andean landscapes.
Once in the area, a path leads to the viewpoint, from where you can appreciate the waterfall's drop. Also, on the way it is possible to find a small cathedral, which sometimes opens its doors to visitors, and an old stone well used in the past to store food. The walk is accompanied by the abundant local vegetation, among which the Kantu flowers stand out, considered sacred by the Incas and a symbol of Andean flora.

It is said that, in the time of the Inca Empire, a young aclla (a woman chosen to serve the Inca) fell deeply in love with a young man from the village. They belonged to different social classes, so their love had to be kept a secret. For months, she and her beloved met in secret, until one day they decided to run away together to protect their forbidden relationship.
According to the stories, the last time they were seen was at the foot of the Apu Pitusiray, right where the Arin Waterfalls are born, also called the Siren Waterfalls. There, to seal their love, they threw themselves into the waters of the waterfall. The woman was never heard from again, while her beloved was found alive, but punished with hard labor for the Inca Empire.
The villagers say that, even today, the weeping and the voice of a woman calling her beloved can be heard in the roar of the water, and they believe it belongs to the young woman's spirit. At the foot of the waterfall, flowers of an intense red color grow, called Kantu, considered sacred by the people of Cusco and an eternal symbol of this tragic love.
Climate and temperature in the Sacred Valley of the Incas
The Sacred Valley of the Incas has a mild climate during the day, with temperatures that usually range between 21 °C and 23 °C, and cool nights that drop to 8 °C. The Cusco region has two distinct seasons throughout the year. The rainy season, which runs from November to March, with February as the wettest month, during this month some tourist attractions, such as the Inca Trail, restrict access for maintenance and conservation work.
On the other hand, there is also the dry season, which runs from April to October. This is ideal for tourism, as it offers clear skies and sunny days perfect for exploring the valley and its surroundings. However, the mornings and nights can be cold, so for this season it is recommended to bring warm clothing.

The route to the Arín Waterfalls or Sirena is considered easy, with a moderate ascent that takes about 30 minutes. It is a suitable route for most visitors, even for families with children, as long as they are used to walking. Even so, due to the altitude, it is recommended to spend 2 to 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or in a town in the Sacred Valley before starting the hike, to avoid altitude sickness and fully enjoy the journey. -
Best Season to Visit
The ideal time to go on excursions in the Cusco region is the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, the days are sunny, the sky remains clear, and the paths are in better condition, this allows for a clearer view of the landscape and the waterfall. While in the rainy season (November to March) the waterfall's flow increases and the vegetation looks greener, the trails can become slippery, which requires more caution. -

To get there without a guide, you first have to go to the city of Urubamba, in the Sacred Valley. From there, you can take the public transport “Corazón de Huáncar” to Calca and get off at the Arín stop. The start of the trail to the waterfalls is a short distance away and is easy to find. -

Another option is to hire a tour with an agency, which includes transport, a guide, and, in some cases, extra activities in the Sacred Valley. This option is ideal for those who prefer to avoid the logistics and enjoy the trip without worries, making the most of the day.
