We will start this stage by transferring you to the Lima airport to board your flight to Puerto Maldonado, the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. Upon your arrival, our specialized guide will receive you to start a fascinating canoe trip, going up the waters of the Tambopata River to our eco-lodge. Likewise, during this river journey, you will have the excellent chance to observe typical bird species of the environment, such as the black skimmer, the lapwing, the great egret, the kingfisher, and the roadside hawk.

Consequently, the following days will be dedicated to the exploration of the tropical jungle led by our local guide, taking as a base our lodge on the banks of the river. In this way, you will enjoy an accommodation designed to preserve the environment, combining native materials with low-impact technology. The isolation of the place will give you peace, as it offers simple but extremely comfortable rooms, equipped with mosquito nets, private bathrooms, and kerosene lamps.

Finally, on the third day of our Amazon adventure, we will coordinate your transfer back to the Puerto Maldonado airport so you can take your flight to the historic city of Cusco. To finish this stage, our representative will receive you in the Andes and will take you directly to your hotel, leaving you the rest of the day free so you can properly adapt to the altitude, rest and begin to discover the charm of the ancient imperial capital at your own pace.

Exploring the Surroundings: Puerto Maldonado and Tambopata

To enrich your perspective on the ecosystem we will visit, we share with you the most fascinating details of the region:

• The City of Puerto Maldonado: Located at the crossing of the Madre de Dios and Tambopata rivers, it is the capital and main access route to this remote region. It is a tropical border city and extremely dynamic, driven by ecotourism, agriculture, and the gathering of local fruits. Besides, its surroundings allow the observation of fascinating wildlife, highlighting the presence of black tamarins, brown capuchin monkeys and agoutis.
• The Tambopata National Reserve: This area under government protection covers 678,800 acres of semi-tropical jungle, extending from the heads of the Andean rivers to the lush Amazon basin. Likewise, numerous studies confirm that it has the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. Its biological wealth is amazing, housing more than 1,300 bird species (including 10% of the world's parrot population), 200 mammal species, 1,200 types of butterflies, and 10,000 botanical species. In the same way, this natural refuge is the habitat of rare and extraordinary species like the jaguar, the ocelot, the tapir, the prehistoric hoatzin, the harpy eagle and the playful river otters.

One of the most spectacular days of the tour takes us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas that was once an important source of food to Incan people. Sacred Valley is a lush agricultural region that keep supplying the city of Cusco with much of its production. As it lays 600 metres lower than Cusco, its average temperature is 5ºC higher so it has got a very pleasant climate.

The tour shows us around the major archaeological sites placed in  Pisaq and Ollantaytambo. At Pisaq, an optional two hour (5 km) trek allows us to fully appreciate this huge antique Incan city nestled high above the Sacred Valley of the Incas and is made up of an Intiwatana, a temple complex, residential areas and far reaching agricultural terracing, with the exquisite Urubamba River far below.  The full of life markets of the valley are open in the mornings, you can buy Peruvian art, jewellery and fabrics and observe  the classic fruits and vegetables markets where local people buy and sell.Then, we stop in Urubamba, considered to be the capital of the valley, where we have a buffet lunch offering Andean cuisine (not included in the package).

Afterwards, we continue to the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, with its impressive temple complex and interesting village, the only place in Peru that still retains its original Inca street plan. This major ruin is known as the best surviving example of Incan urban planning and engineering! But Ollantaytambo is more than that, it is an alive and breathing Incan town! We stay overnight here to absorb its unique atmosphere as well as to get ready for the Inca Trail the next morning!

The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, lasting four days, is a physically demanding route, but the visual and historical reward is absolutely worth it! On this trip, we will travel 44 kilometers (27 miles) of a large road system that connected the imperial capital with its different territories. Likewise, this wonderful route will take us from the high mountains to the lush thickness of the cloud forest, crossing ecological zones that are home to a wide variety of plants, birds, and archaeological formations.

Also on this trip, you will have the valuable support of our cooks and porters, who will take care of the heavy equipment so you can walk comfortably carrying only an essential backpack. This is a journey suitable for people with reasonable physical condition, although it includes steep sections and the conquest of two large mountain passes. Finally, it is vital to be prepared with the right equipment, as night temperatures can drop below zero and occasional rain can happen even during the dry season.

Day 6: Km 82 – Llulluchapampa

From our starting point at km 82, we will start the march following the left bank of the large Urubamba River. Initially, we will visit the fascinating archaeological sites of Willca Raccay and the large ruins of Llacatapata. Later, we will start the climb through the Cusichaca River canyon, a section that will give us magnificent views of the Eastern Mountain Range, highlighting the beautiful and imposing summit of the snow-capped Veronica (5,850 m).

Next, we will take a break for lunch in the Chamana sector and continue our journey next to the river until we arrive at the town of Huayllabamba. To finish the day, from this point we will climb through high Andean lands covered with native trees and bushes until we reach Llulluchapampa, a wide open area where we will set up our first camp.

Day 7: Llulluchapampa – Chaquicocha

On our second day of walking, we will face the biggest topographic challenge by crossing the highest point of the trail: the mythical Warmiwañusca pass, known as the "Dead Woman's Pass" (4,050 m / 13,280 feet). After conquering this great summit, we will go down to the Pacamayo sector to enjoy a well-deserved lunch.

Then, we will return to the march walking on a stone path that will lead us to the ruins of Runkuracay. Following the trail, we will cross the second pass, the Runkuracay Pass, and we will walk firmly on the "Royal Inca Trail" until we marvel at the Sayacmarca archaeological complex. Finally, the demanding day will end upon reaching our camp in Chaquicocha, where we can rest deeply.

Day 8: Chaquicocha – Winay Wayna

Today we will fully enter the cloud forest ecosystem, going down a complex stone staircase to the ruins of Phuyupatamarca. Where, we will explore one of the most complete and best-preserved archaeological sites of the whole route, whose name in Quechua means "Town above the clouds" due to its spectacular location on the top of the mountain.

After a guided tour and having lunch at this natural viewpoint, the route will continue with a steep descent of about three hours through Inca stone steps. Finally, we will arrive at the charming Winay Wayna site, located in the thick forest, where we will have a guided tour before having dinner and camping on our last night of expedition in nature.

Day 9: The Final Assault on the Sun Gate

Early in the morning of our last trekking day, we will start the march to walk the crucial final 5 kilometers of this ancient trail. Our main goal will be to reach the iconic Inti Punku (the Sun Gate) right before dawn breaks. To finish this stage of the journey, from this entrance we will have the privilege of watching the visual show of the sunrise slowly lighting up the Machu Picchu sanctuary, marking the perfect end to our walk. Then we will proceed down to the entrance to register and later we will visit the Inca citadel.

About the visit to the Machu Picchu citadel

Machu Picchu, known as the "Lost City of the Incas", kept its greatness whole because it was never discovered or looted by the Spanish invaders. This ancient building was built on a steep and high wooded mountain with privileged and strategic views of the large Urubamba River. Likewise, the citadel and the imposing Huayna Picchu patiently stayed hidden under the veil of time and the thick jungle vegetation, until they were presented to the modern world in July 1911 by the American explorer and historian Hiram Bingham.

After entering the citadel, there will be a two-and-a-half-hour guided tour of the "Lost City of the Incas". Where, our expert guide will be in charge of revealing the fascinating history and mysteries of this unique place, joining us on a tour of its complex system of agricultural terraces, sacred temples, palace rooms, and perfect water channels carved in stone.

To guarantee an optimal experience and strictly follow current rules, the tour follows a precise logistical structure:

• Main exploration: When your reservation to visit the Inca citadel is made, access is prioritized through Circuit 2, the classic route that allows you to tour the archaeological site completely and in detail.
• Alternative routes: If high demand runs out of spaces for the classic route, the visit will be done through Circuit 1 or Circuit 3, which offer excellent views and a deep understanding of the history of the complex.

Climbs to the mountains of Machu Picchu (Optional)

After the guided tour, there is the chance to climb the nearby mountains on your own to get unmatched panoramic views of the entire historic sanctuary. Additionally, it is fundamental to keep in mind that these activities have an extra cost and require advance booking:

• Huayna Picchu: Requires the Circuit 3A ticket. It consists of a highly steep and challenging climb of 45 minutes up and the same time down.
• Machu Picchu Mountain: Requires Circuit 1A access. It is a longer walk with greater physical resistance, covering about an hour and a half up.

After living the magic of the citadel, we will go down to the town of Aguas Calientes. There you will have free time to have lunch, rest, or walk around the town before boarding the tourist train back at night. The service will end with your ground transfer back to the city of Cusco, successfully closing this unforgettable Andean expedition.

FREE OPTION: Those, who are not able or interested in to hiking Machu Picchu, can get back to Cusco or just stay at the Sacred Valley of the Incas and spend the following 2 days there. In this case, they reach Aguas Calientes by a tourist train (Expedition Service). They overnight in a hotel and they take a shuttle bus the next morning to Machu Picchu where they reunite with that first group consisting of the Inca Trail hikers. This option is for no additional cost!!

Cusco is located in an extraordinarily beautiful Andean landscape at 3,400 meters above sea level. Its heritage as the center of the Inca Empire is clear in every corner, where most of its streets are lined with stone walls.

After the great physical effort of our hike to Machu Picchu, this day is designed for recovery and active rest. Therefore, we will have the time to walk at our own pace through the fascinating imperial capital, interact in its colorful traditional markets, buy unique souvenirs, and prepare to enjoy our last night in the city.

Later, if you want to take a tour of the city of Cusco, we suggest taking advantage of the various optional activities available, such as a complete city tour. In this way, you can take a guided route, starting with a visit to the imposing Cathedral, built between the years 1560 and 1654 directly on the foundations of the ancient Inca palace of Wiracocha. The tour continues to the Qoricancha, the majestic Temple of the Sun and the most important religious site of the Inca empire, where you can admire the highest expression and perfection of Andean stonework. In addition, you will walk through original walled streets on your way to the picturesque neighborhood of San Blas, a sector famous both in Inca times and today for housing the most skilled and renowned artisans in the region.

Finally, you can discover the huge cultural offer by visiting top-level institutions such as the Inca Museum, the Qoricancha Museum, the Archaeological Museum (which includes refined art exhibits), the Regional Historical Museum, or the Religious Art Museum. On the other hand, you cannot miss the opportunity to go up to the outskirts of the city to discover the ancient ruins of Sacsayhuaman; there you will marvel at the ancient Inca sanctuary and its colossal monolithic walls carved in stones of up to 130 tons, assembled with high precision. To top off the experience, you can complement this route by visiting the enigmatic Qenqo amphitheater, the strategic military position of Puka Pukara, and the peaceful Inca baths of Tambomachay.

Today we will begin a fascinating scenic journey on board a tourist bus, tracing the historic route that connects the ancient imperial capital with the heights of Puno. Our tour will take us through the South Valley, traveling along the famous "Route of the Sun" to discover invaluable archaeological and colonial landmarks along the way.

Likewise, our first exploration will be in the town of Andahuaylillas, home to the majestic Church of San Pedro. Upon entering this Jesuit temple built between the 16th and 17th centuries, you will immediately understand why it is known as the "Sistine Chapel of the Americas"; although its colonial adobe exterior architecture is of modest beauty, its interior holds amazing and rich high-quality mural paintings.

Later, we will advance toward the vast complex of Piquillaqta, the only large pre-Inca settlement of Wari style near Cusco. Where, we will tour this wonder of ancient urban planning, made up of more than 200 kanchas (closed apartments) and 504 qolqas (warehouses) that came to house about 10,000 inhabitants. An interesting fact is that: The Quechua term Pikillaqta curiously means "City of the Fleas", a name coming from the intense level of crowding of its tiny rooms, a space that researchers suggest was reused during the Inca era to house the mitimaes (populations moved for political and economic purposes).

Next, we will return to the road to visit the Raqchi archaeological site, where we will explore the monumental remains of the Temple of Wiracocha, built in honor of the Andean creator god. In addition, our climb will continue until we reach the La Raya pass, the natural border and the highest point between the Cusco and Puno regions, which will give us an exceptional viewpoint with splendid views of the surrounding mountains.

Finally, our last cultural stop will take place in the traditional town of Pucara, where the Lithic Museum will reveal to us the enigmatic artifacts and monoliths of a key pre-Inca culture for the development of the altiplano. To conclude this journey, we will arrive at the city of Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca, where we will settle into our hotel to enjoy a well-deserved rest.

In the morning, we will begin our exploration by boarding a boat to sail the blue waters of the mythical Lake Titicaca. This huge body of water, located at 3,830 meters of altitude, not only holds the record of being the highest navigable lake in the world, but also has a microclimate of contrasts, with intense suns and extreme cold nights. Likewise, during our two-day journey, we will make strategic stops at various islets and larger islands to admire the landscape's magic and establish direct contact with the kind and resilient local communities.

Therefore, our first experience will take place on the floating islands of the Uros, where we will discover the skill of a people who built their existence on the water centuries ago to protect themselves from the Colla and Inca tribes. Additionally, we will learn how these families, who today communicate in the Aymara language, constantly build and renew their islands by putting layers of totora, a fundamental aquatic reed that they also use to build their homes and make detailed traditional boats.

Later, after this immersion in the totora engineering, we will continue the navigation toward the peaceful Amantani island. There, our guide will lead us through trails with impressive views of the vast lake, making it easy to meet its inhabitants and their deep folklore. To end this first day, we will live a true cultural immersion spending the night staying in the houses of the Amantani families themselves, sharing their customs and food.

The next day, after a homemade breakfast and saying goodbye to our host families, we will resume the lake journey heading to our next destination: Taquile island. Recognized and protected by UNESCO since 2005, we will be amazed by the skill of its inhabitants in creating fine textiles and handmade clothing, pieces considered as the highest expression of Peruvian textile crafts. Finally, after knowing the local culture and enjoying the views of Taquile, we will start the return to Puno in the afternoon, where we will coordinate your direct transfer from the port to the comfort of your hotel.

Puno is the most important city in the region of the same name. It is considered the Capital of Folklore for its typical dances, like the Sikuri and the Diablada, which are performed during festivities like that of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the city.

Today is a quiet day, with free time to explore Puno, visit its markets, buy souvenirs, do optional activities, and enjoy the last night in the city. For those who wish to extend their cultural experience in the highland region, Puno offers fascinating alternatives:

• Folklore Capital: The city of Puno is widely celebrated for its huge choreographic richness, having an estimated 100 different traditional dances, which are shown with vibrant energy in the massive processions of its Catholic festivities.
• The Chullpas of Sillustani: A highly recommended optional activity is visiting this spectacular nearby necropolis, where you can admire the imposing "Chullpas", huge tower-shaped stone tombs built by the ancient pre-Inca Colla culture.

Today we begin our trip aboard a tourist bus heading to Arequipa, the second most important city in Peru, located at 2,380 meters above sea level and guarded by the Andes Mountains. Upon arrival, you will immediately understand why it is known as the "White City"; its imposing historical center, declared a Cultural World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is built almost entirely with sillar, a clear volcanic stone that shines under the intense sun.

Likewise, the main attraction of the city is its spectacular Main Square and the great Cathedral, an architectural complex that you can calmly admire from any of the traditional coffee shops located in the portals. Consequently, the surrounding streets invite you to explore endless colonial treasures, highlighting the beautiful cloisters of the Jesuit church, the noble San Francisco Church, several perfectly preserved colonial mansions, and the colorful local craft fair. Additionally, the city tour is crowned with a visit to the traditional Yanahuara viewpoint, the perfect place to get the best postcards of the imposing Misti volcano (5,822 m / 19,096 feet) and its beautiful snow-capped peak.

Later, for those travelers interested in history and architecture, we recommend taking an optional visit to the legendary Santa Catalina Convent. This huge complex built in 1580, which worked as a closed citadel completely isolated from the outside world until 1970, will offer you a fascinating and intimate view of monastic life in past centuries.

Finally, you will have the freedom to continue discovering the charms of Arequipa on your own, or join one of our organized optional excursions, such as a detailed city tour or a rural tour through the outskirts (activities not included in the basic package). To end the day, we will take care of your transfer and accommodation in a comfortable 3 star hotel, guaranteeing a well-deserved rest.

We will leave the city of Arequipa in the morning to start the climb toward the traditional town of Chivay, which we will reach around noon. During the journey, you will be able to appreciate the incredible and huge landscape of the Altiplano, reaching imposing altitudes of up to 4,900 meters above sea level. Likewise, we will make a stop in Cañahuas, an important wildlife reserve where you will have the chance to observe beautiful South American camelids in their natural habitat, such as alpacas, llamas, vicuñas, and occasionally the elusive guanaco, as well as vizcachas and various birds.

Later, after settling into our comfortable hotel in Chivay, you will have the afternoon free to explore the streets of the town on foot. In this way, if you want to relax your muscles after the trip, you can visit the revitalizing hot springs of La Calera on the outskirts of the town, whose volcanic waters reach 38 °C. Finally, we will close our first day in the valley sharing a delicious dinner in a local restaurant before retiring to rest.

The next day, very early in the morning, we will leave Chivay with the main goal of reaching the iconic viewpoint of the Cross of the Condor. Consequently, during this tour, we will make stops to admire the picturesque towns of Cabanaconde and Yanque, highlighting their colonial churches, the colorful traditional clothing of their inhabitants, and the impressive pre-Inca tombs dug directly into the mountain slopes. Next, upon arriving at the viewpoint, we will witness an unmatched natural show: the observation of the majestic Andean condors gliding over the canyon's abyss, taking advantage of the morning thermal currents. To finish this journey, after enjoying this scenic wonder, we will start the return trip to the city of Arequipa making a short logistical stop in Chivay, arriving at our destination in the late afternoon.

• Extreme Geography: The Colca Canyon is established as one of the deepest on the planet, covering a spectacular and rugged area of approximately 160 kilometers (100 miles), located five hours northwest of Arequipa.

In this sense, these towns continue to be inhabited by the descendants of the ancient Collagua and Cabana cultures. You may also visit the peaceful Santa Catalina Monastery, the Juanita Mummy Museum, watch locals during their daily activities or undertake the Arequipa City Tour, if you had not time to do so at the arrival. After that, you can enjoy Arequipa´s nightlife!

Today we take our return flight to the Peruvian capital, marking the final stretch of our expedition. Upon your arrival at the Lima airport, our team will handle your direct transfer to your hotel, leaving you the rest of the day completely free to explore the city at your own pace. Likewise, the people of Lima are known for their immense warmth, and the city itself offers a huge amount of cafes, excellent restaurants, and a deep historical wealth waiting to be discovered.

Consequently, if you prefer a structured exploration to optimize your time, we can organize a detailed guided tour upon prior request. In this way, this route would begin uncovering the great landmarks of the historic center, contemplating the Government Palace and visiting the imposing San Francisco church, famous for its Arab-influenced design, its colonial exhibits, and its enigmatic maze of underground tunnels. Next, the circuit would stop at the majestic Cathedral in the main square, which shows the emblem of the city and protects the remains of its founder, Francisco Pizarro.

A kind of luggage you need to take with depends on a kind of tour you plan to undertake, a part of the country you like to visit, a year season and a length of your trip. In general, you should pack as lightly as possible because you carry your own luggage during most of our tours (however, there are not long walking distances – up to 30 minutes). We recommend you to keep weight of your luggage under 10 kg (22 lb.).

Most of travelers use a suitcase. However, a big backpack would be more suitable. In any case, please do not forget a small rucksack that you will need for daily travels (to carry your bottled water, camera, snacks, etc.). It is better to avoid a wheeled luggage and use luggage with shoulder straps.

What Kind of Clothing to Pack to Peru

Clothing to take with you depends on a year season in Peru and a part of country you plan to visit.

When visiting coastline of the Northern Peru and surroundings of Lima, then you need to pack some light cloths (for example, shorts, skirts, dresses, T-shirts), flip-flops, sandals, a head cover as a protection against the Sun (a hat or a cap), sun protection cream, sunglasses, mosquitos repellent and swimsuit, of course.

If you plan to visit Peruvian mountains (Andean mountain range or Altiplano), then we recommend you to take some trousers suitable for hiking, shorts, T-shirts and trekking shoes for the days; and sweaters, fleeces, hats, scarves and warm jackets for the nights. You also should take a sun protection cream, sun glasses and in some cases, mosquito repellent (depending on a route chosen). It is very convenient to have a light rain-gear available in a daypack (e.g. a waterproof poncho or jacket and/or waterproof trousers) as weather changes quickly and rains can suddenly occur. If you like to see the Amazonian rainforest (Manu, Puerto Maldonado, Iquitos, etc.), then the most important item of your luggage must be a mosquito repellent (20 DEET as a minimum recommended)!! Except that, you should take some light clothing with long sleeves and long trousers (to put into your shoes as a kind of protection against insect). You should not forget some waterproof cloths (especially, if you plan to visit the rainforest during a rainy season), comfortable and closed footwear, long socks and a hat.

• After-sun cream or hydrating cream for face and body,
• Insect repellent– recommended minimum is 20% DEET (please note that no malaria has been reported during this trip!),
• Camera and its charger/batteries (please note that batteries are consumed quickly under cold conditions),
• Flashlight/headlamp + batteries,
• Handkerchiefs and toilet paper,
• Small towel and toiletries,
• Sufficient reserve of underwear,
• Swimsuit (to visit the thermal baths of Aguas Calientes),
• Snacks (biscuits, energy bars, chocolate, raw fruits, muesli, etc.)
