What to do if you lose your documents in Peru

If you lose documents while traveling in Peru, report the incident to the police or the nearest police station and contact your embassy or consulate to obtain an emergency passport or safe-conduct pass, if necessary. If a Peruvian citizen needs to travel domestically without a DNI, they can use their passport, driver's license, or C4 certificate.

Steps to follow

File the report: Go to the police or a police station to file a report of loss or theft. This document will be useful for any subsequent procedures.

Contact your embassy or consulate: If you are a foreigner and need to leave the country, contact your country's representation in Peru to obtain an emergency passport or safe-conduct pass that will allow you to travel.

If you are Peruvian and need to travel domestically:

Report the loss: File a report with the police.

Present another document: You can travel by presenting your passport, driver's license, or the C4 registration certificate, which is the Certificate of Registration from the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status.

Contact your insurer: If you have travel insurance, contact your company. They may be able to assist you with the costs of lost documents and other unforeseen expenses.

Where to find help

Tourist Police: In the capital, Lima, and other tourist cities, you can find Tourist Police offices, which will assist you with filing a complaint.

Consular offices: There are representations from various countries in Lima, and in the case of Cusco, some consulates can also offer help obtaining an emergency travel document.
