Planting native trees to revitalize Rumira's community

Planting native trees to revitalize Rumira's community

We did it! 30,000 native trees planting this 2025.

Thank you to every traveler who trusts us. Tierras Vivas, a sustainable operator, takes responsibility for environmental conservation, and every year, we plant 10,000 Queñua trees (native trees). As of 2025, we have planted 30,000 native trees in the high mountain.

Tierras Vivas Involved in Reforestation

Tierras Vivas is present at the beginning of this reforestation project in Andean areas, which over time have become treeless. With the main support of the communities, Responsible People and Tierras Vivas have reforested more than 30,000 trees of native plants in Sondor Rumira, Patacancha, covering about 30 hectares.

The Quenua tree (Polylepis spp.), a native species of the Andean region, plays a crucial role in maintaining the local ecosystem. These trees provide essential habitats for various wildlife species, help in soil conservation, and contribute to water regulation in the high-altitude environments. The reforestation efforts aim to restore these vital functions by reintroducing Quenua trees to areas where they have been lost due to deforestation and other human activities. This initiative not only enhances biodiversity but also strengthens the resilience of the local communities by improving their natural resources and promoting sustainable land use practices.

How do we calculate our reforestation of native plants?

To calculate the area in hectares that 30,000 quenua trees (Polylepis spp.) would cover, we need to know the typical planting density (trees per hectare) for this species. Assuming a common planting density for reforestation projects is around 1,000 trees per hectare, we can use this to estimate the area.

Using this planting density:

Area (hectares)       =                                      Number of trees
                                                      Planting density (trees per hectare)

Area (hectares)      =                                  30,000 trees                     =  30 Hectares

                                                     1,000 native trees per hectare

Therefore, 30,000 quenua trees would cover approximately 30 hectares.

Where Are We Planting?

Peru is a country with diverse landscapes. It’s home to Andean glaciers, tropical beaches, arid deserts, Amazonian rainforests and mountainous scrublands. Our planting site is located in the high Andes near Cusco. Rumira Sondormoyo in Lares.
