Sondor Rumira and Patacancha Community Social Project

Sondor Rumira and Patacancha Community Social Project

The communities of Sodor Rumira, Willoq, and Patacancha nestle within the highlands of the Sacred Valley, a mere hour's journey from Ollantaytambo and two and a half hours from Cusco. These communities are deeply rooted in their ancestral customs and traditions.

The majority of the porters who ply their trade along the famed Inca Trail to Machu Picchu hail from these very villages: Willoq, Patacancha, and Sondor Rumira.

Sondor Rumira Patacancha

Since the inception of the Inca Trail operation, these enigmatic populations have served as wellsprings of inspiration for travellers embarking on the historic route, with their iconic red ponchos and ornate hats. The traditional attire of Willoq and Patacancha is a sight to behold, their distinctive hats and ponchos easily discernible from afar.

Life in Sondor Rumira, Willoq, and Patacancha unfolds amidst harsh, cold conditions, with rustic adobe houses topped by roofs of straw or corrugated iron.

Tierras Vivas and Responsible People

Tierras Vivas and Responsible People are deeply committed to supporting these communities. Throughout the year, we've explored innovative avenues to enhance the livelihoods of the families residing here.

Rustic Housing Initiatives

Our primary endeavour has been the construction of purpose-built living spaces, allowing families to showcase their culture and heritage to the world. This not only provides them with additional income but also enriches their quality of life.

With the invaluable assistance of countless travellers who've journeyed with us, we've diligently trained each family in the nuances of customer service.

Patacancha community

To provide an authentic glimpse into their daily lives, we've curated two distinct itineraries, ensuring no essential aspect is overlooked. You're invited to choose between these immersive experiences:

Fito Toldos

Fito Toldos, or 'fitotoldos,' play a pivotal role in their sustenance, facilitating the cultivation and sale of produce. This fosters the development of new agricultural practices, benefitting their entire community.

Patacancha

Tierras Vivas and Responsible People extend a warm invitation for you to explore these communities through tailored itineraries. Your visit not only supports their journey towards sustainable growth but also offers invaluable insights into their vibrant culture and traditions.

Volunteer

Each year, Tierras Vivas hosts a Christmas party in Patacancha, a high Andean village. The village is located 2 hours faraway from Cusco City or around a 40-minute ride from the Inca town of Ollantaytambo following the road leading to Willoq.

We are committed to sharing the spirit of Christmas by organizing fun activities and giving Patacancha children presents, meals, and hot chocolate. We continually seek new ways to actively support sustainable tourism and local people.
