While it is our intention to adhere to the route described below, there is a certain amount of flexibility built into the itinerary and on occasion it may be necessary, or desirable to make alterations. The itinerary is brief, as we never know exactly where our journey will take us, (remember we are in south america). Due to our style of travel and the regions we visit traveling, with Tierras Vivas can be unpredictable. Day 1: Santiago

This is Chile’s largest city and capital, with internationally recognized vineyards and Andean ski resorts very close by. Explore the many museums and parks, and visit the vibrant neighborhood of Bellavista to see some handicrafts and trendy cafés, Santa Lucia’s hill and San Cristobal´s hill. Day-trips include a trip to Valparaiso and Viña del Mar, Chile’s beach resort, and to Isla Negra, Pablo Neruda’s seaside home.

Day 2-4: Pucon

From Santiago, we take an overnight train heading south to the Lake District of Chile, to stay in the little town of Pucon. This is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, with activities galore. Some of these include a volcano climb, hiking in one of the many national parks, rafting, mountain biking, and skiing/snowboarding in season.

Day 5-7: San Carlos de Bariloche

After exploring the surrounding area of Pucon, we will board a local bus south to Bariloche, the northern gateway to Patagonia. A popular resort town for Argentines, the spectacular surroundings of Bariloche offer loads of outdoor options, like hiking, biking, horse riding, rafting, lake tours, and skiing/snowboarding in winter season. Bariloche is also famous for its quality and quantity of chocolate. So wander around the city, enjoy the landscapes and eat chocolate!

Day 8 - 9: Route 40 - El Chalten

Early in the morning we will take a bus to cross the real patagonia, through the mystical Route 40, spend a night at one of those lonely towns in the middle of nowhere until we get at our next destination, El Chalten, the land of the  famous and challenging Fitzroy!

Day 10: El Chalten

The town of El Chaltén, is located in the north end of Glacier Park. Hikers and climbers from all over the world arrive here, waiting for good weather to undertake the challenges presented by nature,  the Fitzroy.
Trek for a full day (moderate) to Rio Blanco Base Camp and Laguna de los Tres vantage point for an absolutely stunning view, weather permitting, of the complete FitzRoy Massif. Mt. Guillaumet, St. Exupery, Mermoz, Juarez and other mountains form the jagged group. Directly across a small glacial lake rises Mt. FitzRoy, almost two miles of vertical wall in a single bound. If you have enough energy, can visit Piedras Blancas Glacier. The majority of the hike is of moderate difficulty, however the last 45 minutes to the viewing point is difficult but the view is worth it and is one of the highlights of the Patagonia trip.

Day 11: El Chalten / El Calafate

Hike Cerro Torre Valley to Torre Lake and Glacier for a close view, weather permitting, of the awesome spires that make up Cerro Torre and its neighbours. A treacherous cap of ice known to climbers as “the mushroom” tops this slender needle of granite. Stop by the lake for some relaxation upon your return.
In the evening, we will take a bus to El Calafate.

Day 12: El Calafate

Full day tour into Los Glaciares National Park, declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Try to spot condors, rheas, eagles or flamingos en route, but the real star of the day is the glacier itself. Sliding down from atop the southern continental ice field, Moreno''s 70-m wall of ice sporadically chokes off the narrow Canal de los Tempanos, creating a natural ice dam, which eventually explodes in a dynamic display of force. Enjoy close-up views of the approaching front wall of the glacier during a one-hour boat cruise.
Return to El Calafate for the night.

Day 13: Puerto Natales

Our journey takes us south again along the unpaved road to the border of Chile. We spend a relaxing evening in scenic Puerto Natales before our trip to the spectacular Paine National Park, where we spend the next two nights camping among the dramatic granite pillars that dominate the landscape. From our campsite we will take day hikes to observe some of the striking scenery of this protected area, home to a variety of animal and plant life. Arriving back in Puerto Natales in the afternoon of day 16.

Day 14: Torres del Paine National Park

Wake early to begin the trip to the national park. Our trek to the base of The Towers (4-5 hours roundtrip), will start as soon as we get at Las Torres camopsite, a spectacular hike to view the three pink granite towers that made the park famous.

The granite Towers of Paine make a sudden and dramatic appearance on the horizon in the midst of a flat, dry and wind-swept plain. Despite the almost constant summer winds, this is some of the finest trekking country in Chile. Endowed with severe mountains, lakes, waterfalls and glaciers, as well as guanacos, majestic condors, flocks of pink flamingos and large Patagonian hares, the park’s international attraction is immediately evident.

Day 15: Torres del Paine National Park

Travel by van through the national park, taking the time to stop at the Salto Grande waterfall. Cross Lake Pehoe by catamaran (30 minutes) in the morning. Trek to the French Valley (6 hours roundtrip), one of the most beautiful places of this national park, you''''ll see foliage typical of the Patagonia steppe as well as mountain forest and awesome colorful lakes.
Return to Lake Pehoe. Spend the night at Pehoe campsite.

A Couple of Rules:

Illegal drugs will not be tolerated on any trips. Possessing or using drugs not only contravenes the laws of the land but also puts you  at risk. Smoking marijuana and opium is a part of local culture in some parts of the world but is not acceptable for Tierras Vivas travellers. Our philosophy of travel is one of respect towards everyone we encounter, and in particular the local people who make the world the special place it is. The explotation of prostitutes is completely contrary to this philosophy. Our group leader/local operators has the right to expel any member of the group/tour if drugs are found in their possession or they use prostitutes.

Travel Insurance:

Travel insurance is compulsory in order to participate on any of our trips. When travelling on a trip with us, you will not be permitted to join the tour until evidence of travel insurance has been sighted by your leader or local operator, who will take note of your insurance details. When selecting a travel insurance policy we require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation. We strongly recommend that the policy also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage and personal effects. If you have credit card insurance we require proof of purchase of the trip (a receipt of credit card statement) with a credit card in your name. Contact your bank for details of their participating insurer, the level of coverage and emergency contact telephone number.

Tierras Vivas is a Travel Assurance provider, and in case you are interested in get our proposal, please contact us to the following email: info@tierrasvivas.com

Responsible Travel:

Tierras Vivas has been responsible to offering low-impact tours that benefit traveller and host alike. We work with local communities, businesses and individuals to develop sustainable tourism opportunities that help local economies while minimizing negative environmental and cultural impacts.

Keeping in Touch:

If you need to be contacted while travelling we recommend that you set up an email address that can be accessed on the road, rather than relying on postal mail. Ciber cafes are becoming increasingly commonplace and cheap throughout the regions we visit, and have quickly become the preferred way for our leaders and travellers to stay in touch. If someone wishes to contact you in an emergency while you are on one of our trips we recommend that they contact your local booking agent, or refer to our Emergency Contact.
