The city was founded by Luis Jufré on August 25th, 1594 and re-built in 1632. It is located at the foot of Sierras Grandes, in the extreme called Punta de Los Venados, which gave origin to the name given to its inhabitants: “puntanos”. It keeps the characteristic aspect of the mediterranean cities of the XIX century: peaceful life, big old houses of colonial style with wide playgruonds; but joined to buildings of modern style, mostly located in the commercial zone. There are several historic places: the Cathedral, the Santo Domingo Convent and the antique Cabildo of San Luis. Appart from the Indepedencia square, The Pringles square deserves a special mention for its promenade of old wooded streets. Right on the Southern side of the Cathedral, lies an old white qubracho, bounded by tradition with the general San Martín. In this zone you can carry out several activities related to adventure tourism. It has several dams suitable for the practice of water sports and sporting fishing. Within the Sierra de las Quijadas National Park you can visit spectacular geological formations and dinosaurs fossiles. The city offers hotels, restaurants, beach resort, and good services for the car driver.
